Why Mindfulness Coloring Works for Kids
There’s a reason coloring shows up in so many calm-down corners: it quietly does a lot at once. When a kid slows down to fill in a page, a handful of good things happen together:
- It calms them. The repetitive, low-stakes motion helps settle a busy mind and ease stress or worry.
- It builds focus. Choosing to stay inside the lines (or not!) asks for gentle, sustained attention — a nice stretch for kids still growing that muscle.
- It strengthens little hands. Gripping a pencil and controlling small movements is great for fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
- It sparks creativity. Picking colors and making a page their own gives kids a low-pressure way to express themselves.
- It’s mindfulness in disguise. Coloring pulls attention into the present moment — one of the easiest ways to introduce mindfulness to a kid who isn’t ready to just sit and breathe.
And it’s not only for kids — plenty of grown-ups find it just as grounding.

Favorite Mindfulness Coloring Books and Mindfulness or Gratitude Journals
Want a fun mindfulness coloring book or a kids mindfulness journal to have at home and on hand?
Here are some of my favorite options:
I use these Silk and Sonder monthly journals (I have for 5 years now!) and each month they send one with a new theme. In the journal along with the monthly calendar, weekly plans, mood and habit trackers you get a mandala coloring page that usually matches the month’s theme.
It’s perfect to have something that I carry out with me include a little mindfulness brain break as well. They have kids journals too!
Themed and guided self-care journals for each month of the year. Progress trackers for habits, goals, moods and more. Easy to use app with meditations and affirmations included in the membership. These journals are more than just a monthly & daily calendar, they promote a mindful way of life.
These are some other fun mindfulness coloring books and journals that you can find to keep on hand at home:
How to Use Mindfulness Coloring with Kids
Coloring is one of the easiest ways to fold a little calm into a busy day. It gives kids something to rest their hands and eyes on, which naturally slows their breathing and settles their minds — no special setup required.
A few ways it fits into real life:
- In the classroom: a great brain break between lessons or a transition activity once they know how to color them carefully and work on it over time.
- At the calm down corner: keep a pile of these handy for kids that need a real reset.
- At home: a screen-free way to wind down after school or before bed.
- Anywhere you need a calm minute: waiting rooms, car rides, restaurants — tuck a few pages and a pouch of pencils in a bag.
To make it a genuinely mindful moment and not just busywork, set it up with a little intention:
- Find a comfortable, low-distraction spot and put the screens away.
- Offer good materials — colored pencils and markers that feel nice in the hand and don’t bleed through.
- Invite kids to notice as they go: How does the page feel under their pencil? Which colors are they drawn to today — and does that match their mood?
That last one is worth leaning into, since colors and feelings are closely linked. If you want to explore it further, here’s a lesson plan on colors and emotions using the book My Many Colored Days.
