Description

Ready to get trained to do yoga with kids?

Kids’ yoga can be movement, rhythm, music, conversational mindfulness, and fun. The aim of getting kids to do yoga is to help them bring awareness to their bodies and a little more mindfulness to their movement. The methods and techniques can be very different from teaching adults. This is because kids learn through PLAY!

What will I learn?

This teacher training will lead you through the basics of how to bring playful yoga to littles- animal poses, games, sequences, partner poses, and breathing exercises. Plus, learn the ins and outs of dealing with a group of kids–setting rules and enforcing them, encouraging play and participation, and even dealing with meltdowns or power struggles.  You’ll learn playful poses, yoga sequences, games, mindfulness techniques, guided relaxation techniques, and so much more.

This training is taught with a trauma-informed lens and will be appropriate to teach to kids of all ages and abilities. The main ages groups we focus on are 4-7 and 8-12, but you will learn teaching techniques that can help you work with most ages and groups!

The benefit of being in-person is that you will experience what a kids yoga class feel like, you’ll do the poses, and play the games with a group. We will practice the breathing techniques, learn the Yoga Flow sequences together, and try some fun playful and supportive partner poses.  You’ll have so much fun and be inspired at the same time!

Who can join?

Anyone who wants to learn how to teach yoga to kids– no previous yoga training necessary. Perfect for current yoga teachers, educators, counselors, social workers, parents, grandparents, and anyone who works with kids.

What do I receive for the training?

You’ll be eligible to earn 15 hours of continuing education credits through Yoga Alliance. You’ll also get a certificate of completion and a training manual, and a digital set of Yoga Flow cards for kids.

Who is this training in honor of?

Omar Ali-Cherif Houmita, 10, beloved son, little brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, passed peacefully while surrounded by family and friends on January 23, 2023 after a valiant battle with Metastatic Ewing’s Sarcoma.

Omar was autistic, and one of his favorite methods of emotional regulation was adaptive yoga. Some of his favorite poses when he was mobile included Downward facing dog, Child’s Pose, and Tree Pose. When he became wheelchair bound, he did not let his immobility prevent him from practicing the Asanas.

When disregulated and overwhelmed, he would often request “mediation” music, otherwise known as meditation frequency sounds. No matter what environment he was in,  he loved to close his eyes and engage in breath work practices. Doing these simple mindfulness exercises allowed him to reach and maintain a feeling of calm, peace, and relaxation amidst extremely stressful times in his life. Omar inspired people around him to be kind and see the bright side of every situation during his short life. Even after his passing, his loving and happy spirit continues to motivate those who knew and loved him to be the best possible version of themselves.

So, let us continue to honor his legacy by instilling mindfulness in our everyday lives, and in the words of  Omar, to try our best, “when something seems bad, turn it around, and find something good.”

A portion of your registration fees will be donated to the Wes Strong Foundation, to continue to support pediatric cancer patients and their families.

This was my first live yoga training and I thought it was well planned out and covered all my questions. Honestly I have such a good grasp and you did such a good job, I feel I could teach a class today. I liked how we picked a story to do incorporating yoga and storytelling. And I feel very confident in having a kids yoga class that flows and keeps them engaged while having fun. I thought it was very good and I am super happy that I was able to join you. Also I really was impressed with having it at the ARE. It was a nice place to learn.
